Definition of the hv power supply
High voltage power supply, also known as high voltage generator, is a complex power conversion circuit that can convert lower voltage into a higher voltage. It generally refers to power supplies with an output voltage of over 5000 volts. The output voltage of a high voltage power supply can reach tens of thousands of volts, or even tens of thousands of volts or higher. Mainly to provide high voltage for systems and equipment that require high voltage to operate normally. High voltage power supplies are widely used in fields such as generators, power plants, electricity, departments, chemical engineering, magnetic surge arresters, scientific research institutions, power cables, railways, etc. due to their high voltage and stable current characteristics.
When dealing with a high voltage power supply, it is essential to make use of a special output connector that will prevent insulation breakdown, arcing, and accidental human contact. There are standard connectors which are used for applications that are above 20kV.
Constitutions of the hv power supply
The high-voltage power supply is usually composed of transformers, rectifiers, filters, Ripple and Regulator Circuits and other major components, which can raise the low voltage to several kilovolts or even hundreds of thousands of volts.
Transformer: This is a device responsible for transferring electrical energy from the primary winding to the secondary winding without affecting the frequency. It can be used to increase or decrease the level of AC voltage. Mainly through the primary and secondary windings for boosting and lowering voltage. The primary winding of the transformer is connected to an AC voltage source that generates AC current, and the secondary winding of the transformer is connected to the load. The secondary winding and primary winding are not interconnected. Inducing voltage in the secondary winding through electromagnetic induction. High frequency high-voltage transformers are used for high-voltage power supply.
Rectifier – this is a device responsible for changing the AC power into a pulsating DC. The most basic rectifier is the rectifying diode. A diode operates as a rectifier in the forward direction.Rectification methods: full wave rectification, half wave rectification.
Filter – it’s used to prevent the ripple component from showing up in the output. It converts the pulsating DC obtained from rectifier circuits into a smooth DC level, reducing the AC component, and increasing the DC component. There are two basic types of filters namely: the capacitance filter and the resistor-capacitor filter.
Ripple refers to the unwanted AC component in the rectified signal. This communication part will damage the load, so it is very important to install a filter in the power supply. Filters can effectively suppress AC residual components and increase DC components.
Voltage regulator circuit : The job of a voltage regulator is to provide stable DC output. In order for the load to function properly, it requires a stable output voltage. Despite changes in the input voltage level, the output voltage level is still maintained.
To sum up: the high voltage power supply has many parts, they are the indispensable part of the high voltage power supply. This makes it work better, providing the right voltage for various electronic equipment to ensure the normal operation of the equipment.
