What is the difference between a high frequency switching power supply and a thyristor rectifier?

High-frequency switching power supply and thyristor rectifier are two common power conversion devices, they have certain differences in principle, working mode and application scenarios.

First of all, high-frequency switching power supply is a kind of power conversion device that converts the input power into high-frequency alternating current and then converts it into the required voltage or current output through transformer. It uses high-frequency switching devices such as MOSFET, IGBT, etc. to realize the switching control of the power supply, which has the advantages of high efficiency, small size, and light load negative wave. The main principle of high-frequency switching power supply is to control the conversion of electric energy through the fast switching and disconnection of switching devices, so as to realize the regulation and conversion of electric energy.

And thyristor rectifier is a rectifier that can convert AC power to DC power. It uses silicon controlled devices such as thyristors to rectify the current, and realizes the regulation of voltage and current through the control of thyristors. Thyristor rectifiers are characterized by high output current and high load capacity, and are suitable for scenarios that require high-power loads and precise current control. The working principle of thyristor rectifier is to realize the conversion of DC power through the controllable conduction and blocking of thyristor, so as to realize the adjustment and transformation of electric power.

From the working principle, the high frequency switching power supply mainly realizes the conversion of electric energy through the control of high frequency switching devices, while the thyristor rectifier realizes the conversion of electric energy through the controllable conduction and blockade of thyristors. The operating frequency of high frequency switching power supply is higher, generally between tens of kilohertz and hundreds of kilohertz, while the operating frequency of thyristor rectifier is generally lower, generally between tens of hertz and hundreds of hertz.

In terms of application scenarios, high-frequency switching power supply is suitable for scenarios that require higher power quality, higher efficiency and smaller size, such as electronic equipment, communication equipment, computers and so on. It is characterized by wide regulation range, fast response speed and stable output level. And thyristor rectifiers are generally suitable for scenes that require larger output load capacity and precise current control, such as welding equipment, motor speed control, DC power supply, etc. Thyristor rectifiers are characterized by high output current and high load capacity.

In addition, high-frequency switching power supply and thyristor rectifier have some differences in circuit structure and control mode. High-frequency switching power supply generally adopts a multi-stage structure, including input filtering, power factor correction and DC output and other modules, through the control of voltage feedback and switching devices to realize the conversion and regulation of electric energy. The thyristor rectifier generally adopts single-phase or three-phase bridge rectifier circuit, and realizes the rectification and regulation of electric energy by controlling the conduction angle of thyristor.

In summary, high frequency switching power supply and thyristor rectifier in the principle, mode of operation and application scenarios, there are some differences. High-frequency switching power supply is mainly through the control of high-frequency switching devices to realize the conversion of electric energy, which is suitable for the scenarios of higher power quality requirements and higher efficiency requirements. The thyristor rectifier mainly realizes the conversion of electric energy through the controllable conduction and blocking of thyristor, which is suitable for the scenario of larger output load capacity and precise current control. There are also some differences between the two in circuit structure and control mode. Effective use of high-frequency switching power supply and thyristor rectifier two power conversion devices can meet the needs of different occasions, improve the efficiency and stability of power conversion.
